Alexander Romanenko (alexrm) is a nude art photographer and traveler based in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Growing up Alexander Romanenko received elementary education for painting but would later pursue a Ph.D. degree outside the arts. In 2012, he had an occupational change and decided to pursue photography as a full-time career. For the last seven years, his body of work focuses on the creation of emotive and classical portraits and fine art nudes.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he experimented with film photography but would move to digital photography later. He currently uses a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Sony alpha A7, Fujifilm X-T20, and Leica R3 cameras and Carl Zeiss C/Y (28, 50, 85, 135), Leica R (35, 50, 90, 135, 180), Helios 40-2C 85 and other lenses.
Under the artist name alexrm, Alexander Romanenko creates expressive nude renderings through color and black-and-white compositions. He views the naked female body as an aesthetically beautiful subject for art, the driving force for creating emotive and sensual renderings. Additionally, he stays away from themes deeply examining masculinity, eroticism, and the hyper-sexualization of the nude form. In contrast, his photos are imbued with femininity and capture the raw expressions of his models. Furthermore, he explores abstract geometry and the way lines form in the body.
A typical day at the studio consists of photo retouching in the morning, photographing in the afternoon, and ending the day teaching emerging photographers. He prefers to improvise and search for the ideal place to capture a photo, as taking his time allows for inventiveness--a key factor for producing great artworks. He favors using natural light to create more interesting images. However, he still uses mixed lighting techniques to achieve his desired effect. Furthermore, his portfolio showcases a complete understanding of light and its importance in an image's composition.
Alexander Romanenko’s artist persona, alexrm, finds inspiration from his surroundings and images that attract his attention—from random single photos or more specifically the work of German photographer and film director Peter Lindbergh. Furthermore, old cinema films with good light such as the ones with Orson Welles influence him as well.
Alexrm’s photographs displayed in group exhibitions at local events in Kyiv and for the National Society of Photo Artists of Ukraine (NSPAU). One of his professional and greatest achievements is his participation in the 3rd International Annual Photo Awards, where his photographs published in the 35awards catalog 2017 top 35 in the nude category.
